The Internet Is Calling Out The Fact That “The Bear” Was Nominated As A Comedy At The Emmys — Here's Why

The Emmy Awards are finally here, and you know what that means: outrage over The Bear being categorized as a comedy series.

Of course, this is nothing new. When the Emmy nominations first dropped, people were upset that The Bear is continually labeled a comedy. The same reaction occurs when the SAG Award and Golden Globes noms drop as well, since The Bear is categorized the same way for all the award shows. But I’ve watched the series myself and definitely agree that it’s a drama.

Hosts Eugene and Dan Levy made a joke about exactly this at the start of the show.

Well, after Jeremy Allen White beat out comedy legends like Steve Martin and Martin Short for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series, social media flooded with criticism, which only continued as Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colón-Zayas won their categories early in the night.

To be clear, the general consensus online was that Jeremy and his costars gave phenomenal performances that deserve to be recognized. Folks just wish the show was placed in the drama category so comedians could get their flowers, too!

It’s worth noting that Hacks did end up winning Outstanding Comedy Series in the end.

Some people argued that the Emmys are “broken”:

Jeremy Allen White is an amazing actor in a great show… who hasn’t delivered one funny line in three seasons. The #Emmys are broken. Martin Short, Steve Martin & Larry David are three of the funniest humans ever. Comedy needs to be factored into Best Actor in a COMEDY Series.

Others said “actual comedies deserve better”:

I really, really, *really* need the Television Academy to fix the category criteria before next year’s #Emmys because ‘The Bear’ sweeping comedy over shows like ‘Abbott Elementary’ is actually infuriating. All those actors and actual comedies deserve better.

This person asked if Jeremy Allen White if actually funnier than Steve Martin:

I love #TheBear but come on. Can’t we all admit it is in the wrong category?! The show is NOT A COMEDY. Dramas can be 30 minutes and ultimately this does a disservice to everyone involved — is Jeremy Alan White really funnier than Steve Martin?!?!? #Emmys

Some said it “infuriates” them to no end:

Yeah it infuriates me to no end that Steve Martin and Martin Short are never going to win anything for OMITB because they insist on putting The Bear in their category even though it does not belong there#Emmys

Others asked “in what world are steve martin and jeremy allen white doing the same thing”:

i love the bear and it deserves awards but it still sucks that it’s in the comedy categories. in what world are steve martin and jeremy allen white doing the same thing?

And this person said they’d be “so fuckin annoyed” if they were a comedy actor:

Is everyone ready for a CRAZY opinion??? The Bear is great and the cast is all doing stellar work, but the show is not a comedy and if I were an actor saying actual jokes in an actual comedy I’d be so fuckin annoyed watching every award get snatched away!!! #Emmys
