Terry Matalas Will Reshuffle Netflix's Magic: The Gathering Show

In 2019, news broke that the Russo brothers were looking to adapt Wizards of the Coast’s Magic: The Gathering card game into an animated series for Netflix. A few years later, a new creative team featuring Jeff Kline replaced the Russos, Brandon Routh was cast as major character Gideon Jura, and then….nothing. Making TV shows takes time, but you wouldn’t be wrong in wondering where it’s been.

Good news: it still exists, and in fact Netflix re-announced the series during its Geeked Week event. Instead of the Russos, the very busy Terry Matalas (of Star Trek: Picard and Vision Quest fame) is now taking the reigns as showrunner and an executive producer alongside co-EP Patrick Osborne (Feast). In a statement, Matalas called it “an absolute dream collaboration with Netflix, Hasbro Entertainment, Wizards of the Coast, and the brilliant Patrick Osborne to bring the many worlds of Magic to streaming.”

So Kline’s Routh-starring version is fully done. Routh himself recently revealed this, much to the panic of Magic fans who thought it’d been quietly canceled. It’s unknown what this new iteration of the series will be about, but Matalas teased it would show newcomers “what millions of fans who play every day already know: Magic is he ultimate storytelling sandbox. […] It is also a powerful reminder that no matter what culture, country, or plane of existence you come from, we can all unite and become heroes together.”

The Magic series is currently in production, and more information about it will be revealed over time.
