Scientists Make Hugh Breakthrough In Internet Speeds With Optical Fiber Tech As Figures Reach 402,000 Gbps

Scientists from Japan have made a huge breakthrough in the world of internet speeds using existing optical fiber technology.

The news comes as a part of a study carried out at the NICT in Japan where researchers partnered up with other leading labs to utilize optical fiber technology to give rise to mega-speed enhancements.

While we already heard about a mega breakthrough made by UK’s Aston University with speeds going as high as 301,000 Gbps via a single strand of optical fiber technology, Japan is now leading the race with their recent trial hitting the 402 Tbps (Terabits per second) mark.

The news is significant and was attained by experts via the use of more wavelength bands present in the optical fiber domain to better rates at which data was getting transmitted.

To be more specific, the scientists could tap into bands like O, E, and S for data amplification where we usually see C and L bands being used for transmission over a long haul when using fiber networks.

The results gave rise to nearly 1,505 channels that were present in that certain bandwidth. Moreover, every channel attained data rates that were more than the 250Gbps rate.

When you combine all of the wavelengths together, the trial attained 402k Gbps over a 50km distance. To harness more wavelength bands, it ended up developing six more doped fiber amplifiers utilizing some of the rare metal ions on Earth.

We saw many amplifiers increasing fiber transmissions to a great extent and giving rise to more amplification of different wavelength channels at the same time. For now, there is no word on when we will be able to see the NICT commercialize such technology as the benefits are huge.

As it is, the institute has linked up with the likes of Nokia Bell Labs and Amonics from Hong Kong to give rise to more options for great fiber optic technology. The institute further aims to expand the rates for the transmission of such wide bands and also enable high-capacity systems and better compatibility for fibers deployed in the fields as mentioned in a recent statement by the firm.

For now, this is a point worth celebrating as the achievement is massive and can really give rise to the best speeds for internet usage via fiber optic technology.
