Report Finds Lack of Star Wars Outlaws Sales Disturbing

A million copies in a month

A million copies sold is, generally speaking, incredible news to any publisher of video games not named Square Enix. Unfortunately, that exception also applies when dealing with absolutely massive IPs like Star Wars. While we don’t know what Ubisoft’s sales expectations were for Star Wars Outlaws, we’d be willing to bet the Sabacc pot it was more than a million in the first month.

That’s the scuttlebutt, according to Insider Gaming, anyway. The nosy outlet touts allegedly current sales figures from sources close to the game. Outlaws isn’t expected to move many more units and is partially to blame for Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ hefty delay.

Forbes writer Paul Tassi crunched some numbers, finding that those numbers are dismal, even within the context of Ubisoft games. Far Cry 5 made some $310 million in a week, The Division around $330 million, without Disney breathing down the French firm’s neck. If we take those million copies alone and assume the standard market price, that’s just $70 million in revenue for the most crucial window in any game’s commercial life, and over a month at that.

What are your expectations of Star Wars Outlaws at this point? Can Ubisoft turn this thing around? If you picked the game up, is it even worth the effort? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
