Today’s Wordle answer (game #1079) is… BRAVO.
Well, that was a rollercoaster ride: from one of the worst starts I’ve had to one of the luckiest second guesses and ultimately a WordleBot-beating solve in three.
BRAVO is a reasonably difficult Wordle, with an average score of 4.1. It has a V in it, which is the fifth least common letter in the game ahead of only Z, X, Q and J. Plus it has an O at the end, which doesn’t happen particularly often. Against that, it has a very common starting combination in BR. And indeed, a common starting letter; B was also the opener yesterday, remember. So it settles down roughly in the middle of the range, but trending on the more difficult side.
I would usually say that how easy you found it may well depend on your starting word. Plenty reduced the total to the 20s or 30s today, with the best being WordleBot’s favorite, CRANE, which left 23. But STARE (with 33) was also pretty good. However, I’m not sure it would make sense for me to roll out that piece of wisdom here, because my opener, DEIGN, left me with 633 possible solutions, yet I still beat the ‘bot.
That was almost entirely down to luck. I say almost, because I had the good sense to play ROAST for my second guess; it used the most common letters left in the game, so was not exactly an inspired choice, but there was at least a strategy behind it.
ROAST gave me one green letter and two yellows, and cut those 633 options to only three: OVARY, BRAVO and AMARO. I only came up with the first two myself, which is unsurprising given that I have never heard of the latter; apparently it’s a type of Italian liqueur, but it seems unlikely to be an answer, frankly.
With, I thought, a 50/50 there was no particularly reason for me to choose one over the other. But I had to find one way to decide, so I went with the one that seemed most likely to be an actual solution and guessed correctly – the answer was indeed BRAVO and I scored an unexpected, and possibly undeserved, 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1078) was… BASIN.
Every now and then I get very lucky with my random start word. Yesterday was one of those days. I began with SEPIA, which gave me one green letter and two yellows and cut my options to a mere six – a great opening that I was able to convert into a 3/6.
If you weren’t so fortunate today, you might have had to settle for a four, but I doubt it was much worse than that, because BASIN is really not too bad. WordleBot currently reports an average score of 3.8 for it, but scores generally drop over the course of the day and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was down at 3.6 by the time we roll over into Sunday’s game. [It actually ended up at 3.7]
In terms of its letters, there’s nothing particularly notable here. As my analysis of every Wordle answer shows, B is the third most common starting letter in the game, behind only S and C. That sometimes surprises me – because B is not that common overall (it ranks 18th). But then again, B pairs very well with two of the most common letters in the game, R and L, for the likes of BREAD and BLEED. Not that it sat next to either of those today, but it helps explain why it’s often found at the beginning of a word.
B aside, what you have here is four very common letters, one of which – S – is in the ‘wrong’ place; S only occurs 80 times in the middle of an answer, compared to 365 times at the start. That will have led to a lot of yellow Ss today, but words that included it were among the big winners here. SAINT was the biggest winner of all, leaving only one possible solution, but SANER and SNARE (both four) were also great choices, while the more popular STARE (22) and SLATE (19) were not too far behind. I’ll also give a shout out to TRAIN – which is one of the more popular starters, and which left only three; that one might well have influenced the average today.
The five words on my shortlist were BASIC, BASIL, BASIN, BASIS and OASIS; the one I missed, according to WordleBot, was ASTIR. Playing BONUS was a slight risk, because it might have left me a 50/50 between BASIC and BASIL. WordleBot instead preferred a bunch of words ending in S: CLUBS, CORNS, CLOTS and a couple of others. These would all have guaranteed me a 3/6, but I didn’t think to play one because none contained a B, which I definitely wanted in there.
Not to worry: my lucky day continued, with BONUS giving me the N that meant the answer had to be BASIN. I played that next for my 3/6 – and beat WordleBot again too.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
