Jack Black has been cracking up audiences as Po the panda, a kung fu master who fights for good, since 2008, and he’s not stopping any time soon. The action-packed animated franchise is now on its fourth installation — that’s not counting the short films, animated series, holiday special, and string of video games — and it’s still keeping things fun and fresh. In Kung Fu Panda 4, Viola Davis, Awkwafina, and Ke Huy Quan join the already stacked Kung Fu Panda cast for Po’s latest adventure.

If you missed it in theaters or want to watch it for a second (or third or fourth time), it’s making its way to streaming as of June 21. Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch Kung Fu Panda 4 and its predecessors online and at home.

What is Kung Fu Panda 4 about?

Po’s kung fu instructor Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) informs him that he must relinquish his title as Dragon Warrior and find a new hero to take over so he can fulfill his destiny as the new Spiritual Leader of the Valley of the Peace. The thing is there’s a new threat on the rise: a shapeshifting sorceress chameleon (Davis) who aims to conquer the world by stealing the Staff of Wisdom. In order to defeat her, Po teams up with fox thief Zhen (Awkwafina). Expect plenty of action and self-discovery along the way.

Want a sneak peek of Po’s newest adventure? Here’s the official trailer.

Is Kung Fu Panda 4 worth watching?

If you’re a fan of Po’s previous films, you can expect everything you love about the first three in Kung Fu Panda 4: fight scenes, plenty of laughs, and a big emphasis on found family and spiritual growth. As Mashable’s Belen Edwards writes in her review, “Kung Fu Panda 4 certainly features all these ingredients, and even if it doesn’t reinvent the wheel on most of them, it still cooks them together in an enjoyable broth. Sure, it doesn’t come close to topping its predecessors, but it’s another kick-butt entry in what has proven to be a wonderfully dependable animated franchise.” Translation: if it ain’t broke, why fix it?

Viewers seem to largely agree, awarding it an 87 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes (compared to the good-not-great 72 percent critic rating). It also earned an impressive $543 million at the worldwide box office, which surpasses the earnings of Kung Fu Panda 3 and brings the total franchise earnings to over $2 billion. For the fourth installment of an animated film, it’s largely a success.

Kung Fu Panda 4 will make its streaming debut on Peacock on June 21, 2024, about three and a half months after its theatrical release. Additionally, in celebration of the franchise’s 16th anniversary, Peacock will also exclusively stream Kung Fu Panda starting June 6 and Kung Fu Panda 3 starting June 26. To complete the saga, you’ll need to either rent or purchase Kung Fu Panda 2, as it currently isn’t streaming anywhere.

Best long-term Peacock deal

If you want the most bang for your buck, Peacock is currently offering a one-year subscription for just $19.99 through June 30 — that’s 67% in savings.
