How to Create a Natural First Aid Kit

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of PROcure for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Looking for a more natural first aid kit? These alternative treatments and remedies will help your family live safer, and guilt-free, when you’re not feeling your best!

Is anyone already planning for 2018??

Or is it just me??

Maybe I’m a little crazy, but around this time of year I start to seriously think about the New Year. Then I start going on crazy cleaning sprees to sort of purge the “old” and make room for the “new”.

It happens with my clothes, my pantry, and even my medicine cabinet.

As I was cleaning it out last week I realized that I probably have a pretty “unusual” first aid kit and medicine cabinet compared to most. This is because I truly believe in keeping everything “healthy” in my house. Meaning no questionable ingredients, even in my medicines and first aid kit supplies.

So I thought I would share some of my favorite natural first aid kit supplies to help you prepare for the New Year cleaning frenzy too.

Just a quick note…these are all things that I use personally or have researched. Remember to always consult your doctor or medical professional for your own questions and concerns, and seek medical help for any serious issues. This list is informative and is meant to help you be more prepared for MINOR injuries and conditions.

Natural First Aid Kit Items to Have on Hand

Aloe Vera Plant – An age old remedy for burns! I always keep an aloe vera plant in my house to use right away after a burn. If you have a plant, just break off a piece from the plant and apply the gel directly to the burn.

Activated Charcoal – This powder is becoming popular for many different reason in the beauty community, but did you know that activated charcoal can help prevent swallowed drugs and poisons from being absorbed into the bloodstream? Yup, it’s a highly effective treatment for many poisons.

If you or a loved one swallow something poisonous, immediately call poison control and let them know you have activated charcoal, and let them guide you on what to do. Therefore, it’s also a good idea to have the phone number for your local poison control center in your first aid kit as well!

Bruise Remedy Gel – Have you ever wondered how to heal a bruise fast? Well the secret is PROcure Bruise Remedy Gel. It’s enriched with Arnica Montana, a bright yellow flower, used for centuries to help relieve and soothe bruising. This gel helps to fade away bruises and spider veins FAST. It also contains MSM, an organic sulfur widely known to detoxify and reduce inflammation. PROcure is powered by science, and enriched by nature, for safe, guilt-free healing for a variety of first aid needs. Plus, it’s super convenient in these easy to use gels and tubes.

Echinacea – Echinacea is an immune boosting herb. The capsules I have are filled with ground up herbs. They are amazing to take right at the very beginning of getting sick, and can help you get better faster.

Peppermint Essential Oil or Peppermint Tea – Peppermint tea is amazing for digestive issues and easing an upset stomach. While peppermint essential oil is my number one “go to” for a quick headache remedy.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil – Eucalyptus essential oil on the other hand is great for respiratory issues and congestion. If you dilute it with a little coconut oil you can make a natural homemade chest rub to help clear nasal passages.

Lavender Essential Oil – Who needs melatonin when you have lavender essential oil?? Just dab a bit of this on your temples to relax or make a homemade pillow spray to help you fall asleep, and it can even help with headaches.

Tea Tree Essential Oil – There are so many uses for tea tree oil, but as for some quick first aid uses, you can use this anti-microbial oil to help heal cold sores, fungal infections (think athlete foot), and to relieve insect bites. You can see even more ways to use tea tree essential oil here.

Coconut Oil – I bet you knew this one would make it on the list, didn’t you?? Coconut oil is great for so many things — seriously the list goes on and on! But in terms of first aid uses, you can use it for dry or chapped skin and lips, or to make salves and rubs with essential oils.

Epsom Salt – You know I love Epsom salt for so many reasons, but it’s especially great for soothing sore muscles. But did you know it can actually help to reduce itching and rashes? Or that is can help to remove splinters? Yup!

But for those times when I have some serious muscle soreness from all our workout routines, and I don’t have time to soak in the tub for 20-30 minutes, I’ve started using PROcure Epsom Salt Rub. It’s a super convenient gel that helps to sooth aches and pains. I even keep one in my gym bag!

Neti Pot – I have been a true Neti pot believer for YEARS. About 7 years ago I had the gnarliest sinus infection…ever. And because of all the times I got sick in college (because of poor diet, too much drinking, and not sleeping enough — aka being super unhealthy!), I became immune to most “easy” prescriptions for common ailments. I had a personal training client that swore by Neti pots, so immediately after my session I went and picked one up, and felt instant relief…anytime I start to have a running nose. I go right to the Neti pot with a saline-distilled water solution to help clear everything out — I’ll do a whole post about the Neti pot one day! It’s an awesome centuries-old remedy!

Distilled Water – And the Neti pot brings me to my next item…distilled water. This is SUPER important for the Neti pot to prevent brain infections from contaminated tap water (yes, you heard that right — BRAIN infections). And it’s also just a good idea to have for tons of other reasons and emergencies.

Hydrogen Peroxide – This one’s an oldie-but-a-goodie, but I figure it’s worth repeating. Not only does hydrogen peroxide clean out wounds, but it can also help to prevent and help cure ear infections. At the first sign of an ear infection, put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in one ear and lay on your side for about 15 minutes or until it stops bubbling. Then drain your ear, and repeat on the other side.

It’s also great if you have dogs that get into chocolate or something else harmful to them. You can immediately feed them a tiny bit of hydrogen peroxide to make them vomit. They’ll toss up the food or substance almost instantly, before it can be absorbed in their stomach. And it WORKS — trust a dog mom, whose pup ate TWELVE chocolate chip cookies off the counter one Christmas! Read more about using hydrogen peroxide for dogs here.

Baking Soda – Believe it or not this is a great remedy for spider bites. Just make a quick paste with some baking soda and a little bit of water. Then apply it directly to the bite to help speed up healing and decrease swelling, redness, and itching.
