Superior to fidelity mode at 60fps
We’ve already heard from CNET about how much better Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth looks on the PS5 Pro, but don’t just take their word for it: Digital Foundry’s John Linneman has chipped in on X (or Twitter) to talk about how much better the new version of the game looks – and it’s running at a smooth 60fps, remember.
“Wow, yeah, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth looks a lot better on the PS5 Pro,” he wrote. “Night and day difference. I actually put off playing it due to other things happening at the time of release but the Pro will finally push me to enjoy it. Image quality was just too awful on a normal PS5.”
One user asked if Linneman is joking, but he stressed that he’s deadly serious: “What do you mean? Have you not seen what it looks like on a regular PS5? It’s really, really bad. The image quality is among the worst this gen.” While Square Enix did ultimately update the RPG to improve the visuals, it still looks sub-optimal in performance mode on a base console.
The exciting thing here is that Linneman suspects the PS5 Pro may be surpassing the original PS5’s fidelity mode – despite running at double the frame rate. “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth does seem to exhibit superior image quality compared to PS5’s regular quality mode while running at 60fps on the Pro,” he said. “They seem to be leveraging PSSR which looks a lot better than the generic upscaling they previously used.”
PSSR is one of the big features of the PS5 Pro: it stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, and uses AI to upscale images with very little artefacting. This means that frames can be rendered at a lower resolution, reducing computational overheads, but displayed with the comparative quality of a higher resolution, like 4K.
“It absolutely looks crisp – far more than the previous quality mode,” Linneman continued. “It’s not perfect but it’s hugely improved.”
So there you have it: if the tech experts are impressed, then there’s clearly some good stuff going on with the PS5 Pro. Of course, none of this means the system will represent $700/£700 worth of value, but it’s nice to hear some positive comments about the system for a change.
