Elon Musk Condemns Apple’s Partnership With OpenAI And Says It Invites Spyware On Devices

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has plenty to say about Apple Intelligence, especially after the company just unveiled a mega partnership with OpenAI at this year’s WWDC conference.

The Cupertino firm will be equipping its Siri voice assistant with ChatGPT, giving rise to an array of endless possibilities linked to the world of AI.

However, Elon Musk seems to be the biggest critic of this move, adding how it is dumb and invites spyware to all of Apple’s devices.

Musk added that he was not interested in this change and if this act of installing creepy spyware on devices does not stop, he would have no choice but to ban the use of Apple tech on his company’s product.

The news came in the form of a string of tweets across his X app where he called out Apple’s decision as irresponsible and not worth it due to security and privacy reasons. Remember, Siri is the company’s leading voice assistant and to have it embedded with AI is a big deal.

As per Musk, this move is a serious privacy threat as AI giant OpenAI is known for using chats of users for model training purposes. Moreover, Apple is said to have zero clue about what is taking place after data is handed over to the AI giant.

For now, Apple is yet to share its two cents on the matter but we don’t think it is going to be happy with all that Musk has got to say on this front. Remember, Apple is rolling out a true integration of AI in the form of ChatGPT for iOS 18 and Mac which has never been done before.

Apple knew that such concerns regarding user safety and privacy would arise soon so that’s why the iPhone maker mentioned how users would still be in control at all times. Their consent matters the most and if any data of theirs is shared, they would be informed and requested to allow so.

From the looks of this, it appears that opting out of the offering is going to be simple, and if that’s not enough, the company vows to obscure IP addresses and OpenAI would not be allowed to store any queries or requests made on the user’s end.

Along with the option of integrating ChatGPT, the Cupertino firm also wishes to offer a new kind of AI capability for the company’s voice assistant. This would entail more tools that it has referred to as Apple Intelligence. So at one end, you’d have AI-based apps running on a local level on a product while on the other, it would entail clicking on servers belonging to third parties and therefore would protect the data of the user.

Without any doubt, Apple’s approach of including more AI is raising a lot of questions in terms of which services should and shouldn’t be added. Musk added how it’s so absurd that the tech giant cannot make smart decisions on its own in terms of how AI must be used responsibly. But it’s still somehow capable of making sure OpenAI would have the best privacy offerings out there today.

But not everyone agrees with what Elon Musk has to say. They feel the behavior is like sour grapes and perhaps a propaganda attempt against the iPhone maker to try and stop users from making the most of Siri and instead, focus on his own chatbot called Grok.

Another ironic endeavor we must talk about is how all of a sudden, the Tesla CEO is worried about users’ privacy when his own company’s Grok chatbot is getting training from users’ tweets and chats which Musk himself confirmed last year in the summer.

Whatever the case may be, it’s a matter that we foresee having plenty of debates shortly. We know that Apple Intelligence will soon be arriving in the form of a beta this year during the fall season. And until then, we are just going to wait and watch to witness people’s responses.
