Elite Bored Ape NFTs to Go Up for Auction at Sotheby's

Sotheby’s, one of the oldest auction houses in the world, is holding an auction on June 18 that will feature a collection of Ethereum-based Bored Ape non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

The auction’s highlight is Ape #8552, a Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT known for its unique features, including a leather biker vest and a sushi chef headband.

This particular NFT stands out not only for its solid gold fur but also for its previous owner, the now-bankrupt Three Arrows Capital (3AC). This once-leading crypto hedge fund collapsed during the market downturn of 2022.

Alongside Ape #8552, the auction will include two gold-furred NFTs from the Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) collection and an NFT from the Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC), all of which originate from Yuga Labs.

The MAYC is a spinoff NFT collection launched in 2021, consisting of up to 20,000 Mutant Apes, which can be produced either by transforming an existing Bored Ape with the “Mutant Serum” or by minting a new Mutant Ape during a public sale. Meanwhile, the BAKC offers dog NFTs.

The floor price for the cheapest Bored Ape is approximately $47,000. However, gold-furred Apes are particularly rare, with only 46 out of 10,000 minted, so they fetch significantly higher prices. The last gold-furred Ape sold for nearly $940,000.

Therefore, the auction promises to be an important event for NFT collectors, featuring valuable pieces from the BAYC and related collections.

Sotheby’s has a history of successful auctions involving assets previously owned by 3AC. Last year, Dmitri Cherniak’s art piece known as “The Goose” from the Ringers collection sold for $6.2 million.
