Brazilians Raise Concerns Over Supreme Court’s Decision To Ban Social Media App X
A new survey is taking into consideration the viewpoints of Brazilians after the Supreme Court barred social media app X.
The news came after Judge Alexandre de Moraes’ order for X to get removed was implemented across the country with immediate effect. But as per a new poll, not all Brazilians agree with the decision.
As per the stats seen, a small majority do feel that X needed to be banned but not everyone felt the steps taken with that decision was the right one. For instance, freezing Starlink’s accounts and imposing fines on VPNs was highlighted as abusive.
As per the pollster heading the survey, close to 51% of the majority taking part in this survey this week disagreed with the Judge’s decision to suspend X. On the other hand, 48% agreed it was right and 0.9% felt unsure about the entire scenario.
When asked who was in the right in the feud taking place between tech billionaire Elon Musk and Judge Moraes, 49% were on Moraes’ side while 48% were in agreement with Musk. meanwhile, 5% chose not to take any side and stay neutral on the matter.
The fight between the two is not something new. It has been ongoing for several months now and had to do with legal orders to get X to remove content. However, Musk and his executives failed to pay heed. They felt it was an act violating the freedom of speech of users.
This led to an escalation of the incident and Musk further angered the judge by refusing to comply with the court’s orders. In the end, the deadline crossed and the matter started to get intense.
The poll also showed that 48% of the majority felt X must comply with orders from the court to remove content and ban accounts it felt were serving digital militias. These are users who spread hate and violence.
These people were higher in number than the others who were on Musk’s side and disagreed with the Supreme Court, calling the rulings unjustified. Meanwhile, 10% felt X needed to remove some content, if not all. They did not agree with a user ban of any kind.
Now, anyone who tries to reach out for private VPNs to get access to the X app will pay close to $8600 worth of fines per day after the X suspension has come into place. Again, 64% have spoken against this decision.
Remember, the Brazilian market is huge for X so it’s a big blow. Today, it stands as the sixth biggest global market featuring 21 million users in the country as per findings from Statista this year.
X was removed by the Supreme Court last week on Saturday during the early hours of the day. Since then, the poll has come into play to see how citizens really feel about the matter and if the country’s justice department was heading in the right direction.
