Apple axes Powerbeats Pro ahead of major refresh coming next year – 9to5Mac

Apple has just discontinued its Powerbeats Pro wireless headphones. They are no longer available from the Apple Store and have been removed altogether from Beats’ own website. But it’s not all bad news: a major refresh is still coming soon.

The first Powerbeats Pro are no more

Powerbeats Pro being discontinued (via MacRumors) comes as a surprise. It’s unclear why Apple didn’t continue producing the headphones until their successor was ready for launch. But the originals did launch all the way back in 2019, so perhaps it’s not feasible for the company to continue producing certain components.

Or with the variety of more modern Beats options available, sales have dried up.

If you’re in the market for Powerbeats Pro, there are still some units available at a discount through Amazon. However, once inventory dries up, buyers will have to wait for Apple’s big refresh coming next year.

What’s coming with Powerbeats Pro 2

Just last month, Beats partnered with MLB star Shohei Ohtani to tease a first look at the upcoming Powerbeats Pro 2.

The only info shared was a broad 2025 release date, and a glimpse at the revised design.

We then learned that Apple is planning to equip Powerbeats Pro 2 with a new heart rate sensor. This would enable the device to more fully enter the health arena, which seems like a perfect match for the fitness-leaning headphones.

That heart rate sensor is also expected to come to AirPods Pro 3 next year.

It’s been so long since the original Powerbeats Pro launched, we’re bound to see a lot of upgrades with version 2.

My colleague Chance writes:

Looking at other recent releases from Beats, it’s easy to speculate what Powerbeats Pro 2 might offer. For example, Beats will likely use its own custom processor to improve cross-platform compatibility with Android and iPhone. This could include things like Find My support, one-touch pairing, and more across both ecosystems.

Alternatives from Beats and Apple

If you’re not willing to wait for Powerbeats Pro 2, here are some alternatives you can grab now:
