Google and Discord Fined By Russia Over Failure To Delete Banned Content

Android maker Google and popular messaging app Discord are facing a new lawsuit, thanks to Russia.

The companies have been accused of failing to follow the Government’s orders to delete content that it says is banned in the country. This includes failure in terms of adding restrictions to content Moscow says should be inaccessible to the public.

The news was confirmed by the press service from Moscow courts. Certainly, the news is not something new as the country likes to issue bans on many foreign platforms. This hinders them from displaying information online that they consider illegal. The practice has been followed for years.

Time and time again, big tech giants receive fines on a routine basis when they fail to show complaint and this seems to be just one of those cases again.

The district court in Tagansky fined both the companies 3.5M roubles which is the equivalent of $37,674. Android maker Google was also fined for failure to remove illegal content while Discord received the fine for not limiting access to banned data online.

For now, both companies have yet to release a statement on this front and no comments were published either. For a while now, Google has been under a lot of pressure from Russia. This is in regards to content being published online and for not blocking certain channels on its YouTube app that the country says is banned. They are known for displaying Russian media and famous public figures since the start of the invasion of Ukraine.

Russian fines on Google have doubled in the past couple of years, especially in regards to the YouTube app not following orders coming out of Moscow.
