Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) ranks the world’s most peaceful countries in 2024 in its Global Peace Index report. Global Peace Index (GPI) is a scale of 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators which are used to measure Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict, Societal Safety and Security and Militarisation of any country. Iceland is the most peaceful country according to these indicators. Europe has the most peaceful countries.
The Republic of Ireland is the second most peaceful country, followed by Ireland. Singapore and Malaysia are the two peaceful countries in the top ten, coming at fifth and tenth position respectively. This year, North America has seen the biggest decline in peacefulness. This is because of violent crimes and rise of criminality in this region.
The Middle East and North Africa were the least peaceful regions with Sudan and Yemen being the least peaceful. It is because of war and political unrest in the countries in the MENA region. The Russia-Ukraine war and Gaza/Palestine/Israel war has also done irreversible damage to the peacefulness of these area/countries. The economic impact of wars in the countries around the world also play some role in the decline of peacefulness in these countries.
