27 of the Scariest Scenes in Otherwise Unscary Movies

‘Remember me, Eddie?’

Listen, not all of us are spooky season movie marathoners. Maybe you prefer to curl up with a nice, soothing period drama instead of a slasher on a rainy October night, and you know what? That’s okay. Don’t let the true-crime ghouls convince you that you have to get comfy with blood and guts to have a good fall time.

Sometimes, though, a movie you weren’t expecting to contain any springs it on you anyway. For example, The Green Mile is largely a drama, and unless you know it’s based on a Stephen King novel, you have no reason to expect it to get scary. However, “The dry sponge execution in The Green Mile is the most horrifying scene in any piece of media I have ever seen (I’m a horror movie coward), and nothing comes close,” Redditor _JR28_ vowed to r/Movies.

“The music is terror and hopelessness personified, the visual of Eduard’s body spasming and burning is chilling and the reactions of the characters is horrific: Everyone knows exactly what’s happening and understands the monstrousness of what they’re seeing, but they cannot step in to stop it.”

They then asked, “What is the scariest scene in a non-horror movie?” and their fellow Redditors brought all kinds of unexpected jump-scares.
